Obituary

Evelyn Hollaway Gingrich, 99, a sixty-one year resident of Peters Township in Franklin County, departed this life on Monday, October 5th 2020. The daughter of Lily May (Stripling) and Richard Homer Hollaway, she was born in Gadsden, Alabama on September 13th, 1921, the third of six children. Their father was a construction engineer employed on large building projects, so the family moved around the Eastern United States for much of Evelyn’s early life. She attended elementary school in Middletown, Ohio, and Tuckerton, New Jersey, graduating the 8th grade in Gadsden, Alabama. Evelyn was a 1940 graduate of Philadelphia’s Simon Gratz High School.

During the War Years, Evelyn worked in office and secretarial positions with the Greenway Reflector Manufacturing Company, in Philadelphia. Following this, in 1946 she secured a position with RCA, first in Accounting, then as secretary to the Assistant Controller of RCA Service Company, and finally as executive secretary in the RCA Television Service Company in Collingswood, New Jersey.

A chance meeting while on vacation at Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts introduced Evelyn to John K. “Jack” Gingrich. They noted that both cars had Pennsylvania license plates, occasioning a conversation that led to their eventual engagement. On June 20th, 1959, they were married at the First Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ. Evelyn was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed city life in her young adult years before taking up residence in the Mercersburg area, engaging herself with homemaking for her husband and father-in-law, and becoming active in local civic and church activities.

For many years, Evelyn ran A Country Road Gift Shop, specializing in framing and giftware, and served as the local agent for Charles Stoner prints. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Upper West Conococheague for over 60 years, serving as Deacon and member of the Session.

Evelyn is survived by daughter Deb (Tommy) Tew and grandson Joseph, as well as nephews John (Vickie) Hollaway, James P. (Janis) Hollaway, brothers Mark (Derong) and Kim (Renelyn) LaBrie, and nieces Ruth Hollaway, Heidi (Doug) Crawford and Emy (Mark) Ackernecht. She was preceded in death by brothers Capt W.D. Hollaway and wife, Carlotta; Charles B. Hollaway an wife Leona; Paul (infant) Hollaway; and sisters Dorothy Cordelia Hollaway and Clarice (Hollaway) LaBrie.

Family and friends will celebrate Evelyn’s life on Friday, October 9 with a 2:00 private service (necessitated by public gathering restrictions) at the Presbyterian Church of the Upper West Conocheague in Mercersburg with Revs. Ron Martin-Minnich and Anthony Lorenz officiating. Friends may join the service on Facebook @PresbyterianChurchUpperWestConococheague and are welcome to gather with family immediately following the service at Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg where Evelyn will be interred. Visitation and viewing will be held on Thursday, October 8, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian Church of the Upper West Conococheague, 34 West Seminary St., Mercersburg, PA 17236.
